Smoke Controlled Area Rules

Many parts of the UK are now ‘smoke controlled areas’ meaning your chimney must NOT emit smoke unless you’re burning an appropriate fuel or using exempt appliances such as a burner or stove.

Failing to comply can result in you being fined.

Exempt appliances

Unauthorised fuels, including wood, can be burned in certain appliances such as some boilers, cookers or stoves.

You must only use the types of fuel that the manufacturer says can be used in the appliance.
